Romania Immunization Coverage Estimates (WHO/UNICEF, 2021 Revision)
This report summarizes the national immunization coverage estimates for Romania from WHO and UNICEF based on data available by July 7, 2022. Estimates are periodically revised and use country-specific data reviewed individually.
Estimated coverage levels (%) by Vaccine/Dose/Year (selected key years):
- BCG: Consistently high (>98%) coverage from 2010 to 2021.
- DTP3: Coverage ranged between 86-97% in most years but dipped to 82% in 2017.
- Hepatitis B Birth Dose (HepBB): Highest estimated coverage recorded in 2013 (98%) and remained high (93-99%) in the following years, though stock-outs were reported.
- Hepatitis B 3rd Dose (HepB3): Coverage declined in the late 2010s, ranging from 87% down to 86%, before recovering. Stock-outs were concerning.
- Hib3: Coverage declined significantly in the late 2010s, ranging from 52% to 93% in 2021, with no reliable data for earlier years. Stock-outs were frequently reported.
Data Quality/Coverage Assessment:
- Data primarily consists of administrative/official records.
- Coverage estimates are generally based on reported data, but the quality is variable and often considered weak ("D-"). Challenges to the data quality are frequent.
- Official/Government estimates are provided and considered, but they may differ from Administrative estimates.
- Some years, like 2017 (e.g., DTP3), received a lower confidence grade due to reported program stock-outs.
- Relying on administrative data without independent survey confirmation is a limitation for many estimates.
Key Observations:
- All estimates should be used with caution due to concerns about data quality (low confidence rating 'D-') frequently mentioned alongside many estimates.
- While some vaccines like BCG maintained consistently high coverage, others like HepB3 and Hib3 showed fluctuating and often lower levels during the reviewed period, sometimes linked to reported stock-outs.
- Official government data provides one perspective, but administrative survey data often yields different, usually lower, results, possibly indicating overestimation by the program.
Survey Information Note: Some estimates acknowledge information from registers and surveys, contributing to confidence but still often facing data quality challenges. Detailed survey methodology descriptions for specific years are also provided.
