Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary

Week 12, 2011 (March 21-27, 2011)

I. Epidemiological Situation

• Burkina Faso: 136 cases, 19 deaths (14.0% lethality), district of Pama remains in Alert (AR=5.3 per 100,000).
• Cameroon: 65 cases, 4 deaths (6.2% lethality), district of Maroua Rural remains in Epidemic (AR=30.1 per 100,000).
• Nigeria: 54 cases, 4 deaths (7.4% lethality), 1 LGA (Yorro, Taraba) reached epidemic threshold (AR=19.4 per 100,000).
• Chad: 704 cases, 20 deaths (2.8% lethality), 9 districts in Epidemic (Koumra AR=51.8, Sarh AR=43.0, etc.) and 4 districts in Alert (Melfi AR=6.5, Laokassy AR=5.3, etc.).
• Niger: 47 cases, 6 deaths (12.8% lethality), districts at AR=100.0 (%).
• Notable: High predominance of NmA serogroup in several countries, except Chad/Niger where Nm and NmW135 are prevalent.

II. Synthesis (Weeks 1-12, 2011)

• Chad leads with 2789 cases and 144 deaths (5.2% lethality).
• Togo and Niger showed high lethality rates (27.3% and 15.0%).
• Burkina Faso and Nigeria reported over 1700 and 362 cases, respectively.
• Mali, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin reported significant numbers but generally lower mortality (except Cote d'Ivoire).
• Spn (Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Nm.W135 dominated the pathogens identified by PCR/Latex/Culture according to week 12 data, while in annual summaries, NmA was predominant across most affected countries.

• Maps (Fig 1, Fig 2, Fig 3) illustrate district-level attack rates and pathogen distribution across the week and the cumulative year.
