Overview of GYTS: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), part of the Global Tobacco Surveillance System, monitors youth tobacco use in students aged 13-15 years using a standardized methodology. Conducted in Sri Lanka in 2015 with 1,505 participants, the survey found low overall tobacco use, with a response rate of 81.9%.

Tobacco Use: Overall, 1.7% of students currently use tobacco, with higher rates among boys (3.2%) than girls (0.2%). Specifics show 1.5% smoke cigarettes and 2.4% use smokeless tobacco. Lifetime tobacco use was reported by 6.8%.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure: About 35.7% of students were exposed to tobacco smoke in enclosed public places, and 13.4% at home. Schools had high exposure rates.

Media Awareness: 88.0% of students noticed anti-tobacco messages in the media, while 44.6% saw tobacco advertisements at points of sale.

Knowledge and Attitudes: 86.2% of students believe tobacco smoking is harmful, and 96.4% support prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places. High awareness and positive attitudes towards tobacco control were observed.
