In 2011, an estimated 33.5 million Hispanics of Mexican origin lived in the United States, comprising nearly 65% of the total U.S. Hispanic population. About 35% were foreign-born, with 65% arriving in the U.S. 1990 or later; 24% were naturalized U.S. citizens. Language proficiency: 66% of adults aged 5+ spoke English proficiently. Median age was 25 years, younger than 37 for the U.S. population and 27 for all Hispanics. Fertility rates showed about 8% of women aged 15-44 gave birth in the previous 12 months, with 45% of births occurring among unmarried women. Geographical distribution: 52% resided in the West, primarily California (36%), and 35% in the South, primarily Texas (26%).
Educational attainment: Only 10% of adults aged 25+ held a bachelor's degree, lower than 13% for all U.S. Hispanics and 29% for the general U.S. population. Income: Median annual earnings for ages 16+ were $20,000, the same as U.S. Hispanics overall but less than $29,000 for the U.S. population. Poverty: 28% lived in poverty, higher than 16% for the U.S. population overall and slightly higher than 26% for all Hispanics. Health insurance coverage: 33% lacked insurance, exceeding 30% for Hispanics and 15% for the U.S. population; 14% of children under 18 were uninsured. Homeownership: 49% owned their homes, higher than 46% for all Hispanics but below 65% for the U.S. population.
