2013 Young Leader Program Summary

The Young Leader (YL) program, part of the Pacific Forum CSIS, is a key initiative that fosters collaboration and leadership among the next generation of specialists in Asia-Pacific security and policy. In 2013, the program marks its ninth anniversary and is set to be a particularly active year with several planned events and activities. The program is also expanding its focus to include food, energy, and water security.

Main Events and Activities

The 2013 YL calendar features a series of high-level dialogues and seminars aimed at enhancing understanding and cooperation in the region:

Jan. 15: Pacific Forum CSIS Board of Governors Meeting (Honolulu) – This event raises funds for the James A. Kelly Korean Studies Fellowship.
Jan. 27-29: US-China Strategic Dialogue (Beijing) – Focuses on US-China relations, regional security, and global governance.
Feb. 4-5: US-ROK Strategic Dialogue (Maui) – DTRA-sponsored, centered on extended deterrence for South Korea and strategic relations in the Asia-Pacific.
Feb. 5-6: Young Leaders US-Japan-ROK Trilateral Dialogue (Maui) – A Young Leaders-only event promoting cooperation among next-generation specialists from the US, Japan, and South Korea.
Feb. 7-8: US-Japan Strategic Dialogue (Maui) – DTRA-sponsored, focusing on extended deterrence for Japan and strategic relations in the Asia-Pacific.
March 13-16: US-Japan Security Seminar (San Francisco) – MoFA and JIIA co-hosted, bringing together scholars and officials to discuss bilateral security issues.
April 22-25: WSD-Handa Young Leaders Forum (Geneva) – A major international security forum where Young Leaders engage with 500+ decision-makers from various fields.
Sept: Asia-Pacific Security Forum (Taiwan) – Annual dialogue involving Taiwan, EU, Philippines, and the US on regional security.
Fall: WSD-Handa Young Leaders Forum (TBD) – Another YL program supported by WSD-Handa.

Fellowship Opportunities

The East-West Center in Washington, DC, is offering two fully-funded Fellowships:

Asia Studies Fellowship: Open to scholars and analysts interested in international relations in Asia, political and economic change in Asia, U.S.-Asia relations, and economic integration in the Asia-Pacific.
Japan Studies Fellowship: Targeted at those with expertise in U.S.-Japan relations, including diplomatic, politico-security, economic, social, and international issues. Preference is given to applicants with specialization in Japan's economy or US-Japan economic collaboration.

Both fellowships include residence at the East-West Center, policy-relevant research and writing, and public presentations. Field research in Asia may also be supported. Applications are due by February 1, 2013, with fellowships beginning as early as May 2013 and ending as late as January 2014.

Internship Opportunities

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is also seeking interns for the Political and Security Affairs (PSA) group:

PLA Studies Internship: Part- or full-time, assisting in the annual PLA Conference.
Political and Security Affairs Internship: Part- or full-time, supporting research, writing, publications, database administration, and event planning.

Both internships are due by February 1, 2013, and are expected to run from spring to fall 2013.

The first full edition of the Young Leaders newsletter is set to debut on Feb. 15, 2013.
