Why Airlines Need A New Aircraft Purchasing Strategy
Airlines face the challenge of replacing aging fleets, necessitating a shift in purchasing strategy due to innovations in aircraft and components. The success of these acquisitions requires accounting for total lifecycle costs, not just initial purchase or lease prices.
Existing TCO estimates often rely on limited metrics like fuel burn and OEM-reported costs. A comprehensive TCO should incorporate factors including warranty period, pricing catalogs, material escalation, and service updates. Deliberate consideration of these factors enables better fleet decisions, avoiding unnecessary financial risks.
Airline leverage is highest at the point of purchase for both engines and airframes. By engaging multiple RFP processes (aircraft, engine, airframe maintenance, and component) simultaneously, airlines can maintain control over long-term costs. Negotiating maintenance terms early preserves this leverage.
Additionally, airlines must foster competition between independent MROs and OEMs to drive down costs. As the industry prepares for fleet refreshes, proactive TCO management offers a competitive advantage over those using outdated purchasing methodologies.
