Summary of Findings: Prescription Drugs Online
Key Statistics & Findings
- Internet Use for Information: 26% of American adults had researched prescription drugs online (21% personally, 5% via others). Higher rates among internet users, those with fast connections, long-time users, college graduates, Baby Boomers, Rx households, whites, and insured individuals.
- Actual Purchases: Only 4% of Americans (about 93 out of 2200 surveyed) had ever purchased prescription drugs online (3% placed their own order, 1% had someone else do it). Higher purchase rates among internet users, higher-income households, long-time internet users, those willing to pay more, users of subscription sites, Rx households, and those taking regular meds or living with someone who does.
- Motivation: Convenience was the primary reason for online purchase; cost savings, time savings, and privacy were cited but privacy least often.
- Trust: Only 20% felt online purchases were as safe as local ones, while 62% felt they were less safe. Concerns about illegal access and safety of foreign drugs were widespread.
- Regularity & Route: Most purchasers used U.S.-based sites requiring prescriptions, often from their own doctor. Three-quarters bought drugs for chronic conditions, one-quarter for other (often non-medical) purposes like weight loss or sexual performance. Shipping problems were the main reported issue for dissatisfied customers. 90% planned to purchase again.
- Email Advertising: While few RX buyers reported being prompted by email ads, a large number of internet users (55% overall) received unsolicited email ads for prescription drugs, sexual health medications seeing higher rates (63%).
- Market Definition: 64% of households were designated "Rx households" due to regular prescription drug use (either by themselves or a resident). Retail pharmacies remain dominant for drug sales.
Conclusion & Implications
- Trust in the online marketplace is currently low.
- Despite concerns, a small but active market exists, driven primarily by convenience and cost savings.
- If ignorance is dispelled and positive experiences increase, interest and purchases could grow, similar to other online activities like banking or travel.
- Ongoing research and regulatory clarity are important for market development.
