WHO Faith Network Update Summary
Early Engagement and Key Activities Since 2020
The WHO Faith Network has been actively involved since 2020, focusing on COVID-19 response. Key deliverables include: guidance for religious leaders, a high-level dialogue with WHO Director-General Tedros in 2021, joint webinars on COVID-19 communications and vaccine equity, formalization of the network in 2021, publication of the WHO strategy for engaging religious leaders in health emergencies, and a global conference on national responses. Additionally, there was a commission invitation from Lancet staff.
2022-23 Key Areas of Interest
- Strategy dissemination and operationalization: Sharing accurate health information to promote healthy behaviors and advocate for health equity.
- Trust development: Building trust mechanisms and documenting resources to enhance emergency preparedness.
- Communication and advocacy: Creating and repurposing resources for health emergencies, including checklists for faith partners.
- Mapping: Documenting health assets owned by faith-based organizations (FBOs) and partners.
- Research: Collecting and publishing data on various health-related topics to support evidence-based practices.
Strengthening Global Health Emergency Architecture (5Cs)
The WHO introduced a framework based on five core components for health emergency preparedness: collaborative community, emergency coordination, clinical care, countermeasures, and surveillance protection. This includes global platforms like the Health in the World of Work Network and the PRET Initiative, which applies a transmission-approach to planning for pathogens, considering modes like respiratory, arthropod-borne, and zoonotic.
Future Directions and Integration
In 2025 and beyond, the network will consolidate with other platforms under the Pandemic Preparedness Global Platforms Unit, potentially merging efforts through combined meetings on topics like hospital simulations. Integration into the PRET Partners Engagement Forum is planned, with bi-monthly sessions featuring discussions and breakout groups for collaborative planning. Ongoing activities include advocacy support for pandemic accords and mental health initiatives, with publications and global consultations raising awareness.
